In An Emergency

If in doubt and it is a serious incident Dial 999 ( or 112, the EU emergency number)

If the patient appears to have stopped breathing and/or has no pulse follow the Defibrilater instructions HERE

If the patient shows ANY sign of a stroke DON’T HESITATE, Dial 999. Minutes count! It may mean the difference between a slight impairment and life-changing brain damage.

I got out of my chair to go to bed and noticed that my right arm was numb. I IMMEDIATELY dialed 999. It saved my life.

I’m still weak on my right side but getting better every day. If I had taken two aspirins and gone to bed I probably would not have woken up!

Stroke Signs and Symptoms

The main symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the word FAST: Face-Arms-Speech-Time.

  • Face – the face may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile or their mouth or eye may have dropped.
  • Arms – the person with suspected stroke may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there because of arm weakness or numbness in one arm.
  • Speech – their speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake.
  • Time – it is time to dial 999 immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms.
