In 2021, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, the dry stone wall that kept the graveyard from falling into the road, collapsed.
Joanne Beaver tells this storey:
All the talk of the Church Wall falling made me think of a conversation , many years ago, between, the then priest Pa Kettle , George Andrews and Peter, my late husband. George wanted to be buried near the boundary with the field Jeffy now has so he could continue to shepherd his sheep. Pa Kettle nodded approvingly.
Peter wanted to be buried close to the wall near the road, so he could see what was going on in the village.
“Good God NO!!!” said Pa Kettle , “because one day that wall is going to crash into the road, and you would go with it. Think of poor Joanne having the expense of burying you twice !! “
As I walk past I still hear Pa Kettle words.
