A message from Wing Parish Council:

The Parish Council recognises the national mood following the passing of our much loved Queen, and supports the book of condolence that has been opened in the village church. The flag on the church is flying at half mast subject to protocol below.

The following information has been received from Rutland County Council which may be of interest:

Books of condolence have been opened at the offices of Oakham Town Council, Uppingham Town Council and at All Saints Church in Oakham. A digital book of condolence has been made available by The Royal Family and can be accessed online at: www.royal.uk/send-message-condolence. All are welcome to sign and show their respects.

Oakham Castle will host two books of condolence. These will be opened as a special tribute after Rutland’s Proclamation at 12.30pm on Sunday 11 September, announcing the Accession of His Majesty King Charles III. Rutland’s Proclamation on Sunday 11 September is an historic occasion and will be read by High Sheriff Geoff Thompson. It is open to anyone who wishes to attend and people are encouraged to arrive at the Castle Grounds from 12.15pm.

Flags around the United Kingdom are currently flying at half-mast in memory of The Queen but will be raised at 11.00am on Saturday 10 September in accordance with Royal protocol and the National Proclamation. Flags in Rutland will be lowered to half-mast again following the Local Proclamation on Sunday 11 September, at which point members of the public will be invited to sign the books of condolence inside Oakham Castle.

Floral tributes to Her late Majesty can be left in a special area at Oakham Castle. Mourners are asked to approach Castle staff if they are unsure of where to leave flowers. People are also asked to lay floral tributes without plastic or cellophane wrapping or remove the wrapping before they are placed.

The Rutland Lieutenancy is making plans for a permanent tribute to Her late Majesty. We are supporting these efforts through the Lieutenancy Office, with further details to be confirmed by the Lord-Lieutenant.

Council services will continue to operate as normal throughout the national mourning period, while remaining of mindful of the need to reflect the national mood and show consideration for all those in mourning.

Tony Clark (1923-2022) an appreciation

Tony was born in Norfolk, the youngest of 6. Whilst the family moved a number of times, he stayed with his aunt in Ketton while he attended Oakham School. The Second World War had started by the time he was 17: from then till 1949 he served in the RAF ground crew – a perfect job for Tony who loved anything mechanical. Postings were to Cape Town and, later, Egypt.

Tony met Muriel at a wedding where she was a Bridesmaid and he was Best Man. They Married in 1951 and came to live in Seaton where their two daughters, Caroline and Pamela, were born. Pam recalls Sunday afternoon picnics as a short drive in the Morris 8 to a nearby field in which there was a railway. There the family would sit and watch the steam trains pass by. Years later, Tony’s model train set expanded into a wonderful layout, his friend Peter arriving from Manton, ostensibly to help with the garden. Once the chores were finished, you’d find them in the shed playing trains!

In 1977 Tony, Muriel and Pamela moved to Wing. Tony was fully involved in village life at Wing, being Churchwarden, Parish Councillor, and Tower Captain – bell ringing having been a life-long hobby. He supported Muriel in her love of singing and, for many years, was part of the “crew” at Rutland Musical Theatre. Up until his early 90s, Tony could always be found on his allotment where he grew his own vegetables. Tony’s faith was important to him: he showed a great interest in developing worship and the upkeep of the church fabric and grounds, wherever he lived. He will be much missed.

Tony had reached the age of 99 when he died, after a short illness. This grand old gentleman will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and by all in the village from his years as Parish Councillor.

Tony’s funeral was on Friday 12th August 2022

2.30pm Wing Church- celebration and thanksgiving service.

Afterwards at Wing Community Hall – refreshments.
