Dorothy’s Tree. Trees are long lived, stable and pretty permanent . They put their roots down deeply into the soil so villagers thought it only appropriate to celebrate and commemorate Dorothy Buckby’s 100 years in Wing by planting a tree. Dorothy’s tree planting was not merely decorative; as befits the former land girl she was determined to ensure all the soil was filled in around the roots.
We have had a fantastic response to the last Food Bank appeal for Christmas. We were able to send over seven boxes of food and goodies in the first week.
Thank you very much everybody for being so generous.
Please could we keep donations coming – they still need more items for the Goody Bags but also need more of some staple items:
Fray Bentos meat pies, chicken pies and cheese pies
As you will recall, in May the Covid19 Group arranged VE day celebrations to bring the community together. It was a great success and as Christmas approaches, we are announcing another event.
Wing ‘Christmas Cheer’ on 23rd December 2020
between 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
This will be an opportunity for everyone to have festive drinks (or non-alcoholic and children’s alternatives) and a mince pie and other festive fayre at various locations around the village. Santa will make an appearance, Christmas Carols, socially distanced, will be sung in the churchyard alongside opportunities to view the Christmas Lights and Advent Windows throughout the village.
We are delighted that so many people are already displaying festive lights and Advent windows around the village. The more the merrier – thank you! Do let us know if you are willing to participate and we will create a map to guide you around the village. Please let us know by Saturday 5/12/2020
Mindful of the Covid19 rules, we would like to set out an overall structure for the evening to observe rules and keep everyone safe.
The route will start at the Village Hall where a map of the Advent Windows can be collected, along with a drink and other goodies. The route will then take you past the Church where carols will be sung and then round the village to see the Advent Windows and Christmas Lights. At various locations there will be additional festive drinks and fayre, before finishing with Santa at Townsend Barn and, no doubt, further drinks!
To ensure social distancing, we would ask that you let us know of your interest to attend so we can allocate a timeslot for your household to begin your evening. Obviously, we have to avoid large numbers assembling in any location in order to comply with the regulations and keep everyone safe.
Please respond Email: wingrutlandpc@gmail.com to register your interest.
Please let us know and we will bring a festive drink and fayre to you at home during the day. Please phone one of the wellbeing volunteers (see below) if you would like a home visit or please reply to this email.
This event is hopefully an opportunity to raise a little bit of money. Once any costs are covered, all monies raised will go to the Church. Any donations will be gratefully received and there will be collection buckets at the various drink / food tables around the village.
The Grand Christmas Tree Lights will be turned on at 6:00 pm on Wednesday 2nd December.
All are welcome to come and see the lights being turned on;- PLEASE maintain social distancing and the household rules for tier 2.
In what has been a difficult year, we hope you will feel able to join in the festivities to provide much-needed cheer and an opportunity for the village to celebrate together.
Happy Christmas to you all

Good news! We have decided to go ahead with the free outdoor children’s Christmas craft event for school-age, unaccompanied Wing children and grandchildren. It will be held in the open-air barns at Townsend House, Morcott Road at 2pm on Saturday 5 December. We will be making a single, light-up Christmas decoration in socially distanced groups of 6. Where possible we will look to group children with friends or family members.
Places must be reserved in advance please and parents/carers will need to complete a registration form with contact details. If your children or grandchildren would like to take part, please call or text Carolyn (07966193634) or email ccomben2@gmail.
