IMPORTANT VILLAGE MEETING REGARDING WING VILLAGE HALL WEDNESDAY 17 JANUARY 7PM


The Parish Council, as Trustee of the Charity Wing Community Centre (Wing Village Hall) wishes to seek the approval of Wing’s community to extend the Scheme governing the Charity to enable the Village Hall Management Committee to spend monies raised in the future, in excess of that required to maintain and develop the Village Hall, on activities of wider benefit to the community.

The Charity was originally established to established to ring-fence the funds raised for the benefit of the village hall only.

At present the trust document restricts how monies raised can be spent. This will require a change to the Charity Commission Objectives and will require the agreement of a majority of the residents.

Please come along to hear how the proposed changes could work.

It is important that residents are fully informed about the impact these changes could have.

From Gerry Robinson, organizer of a petition to stop the proposed one way system in Oakham


As we enter the final week of the petition before handover next Thursday, with well over 2,400 signatures, including hard copy forms, (2200 from Rutland and 1200 from Oakham alone), I have a few important points to brief you on:

Hand over has been confirmed with Rutland County Council to be at 16:00 on Thursday 14th December. It was decided last night that we will meet at the Market Square at 15:30 and march down to the Council Offices together. This may well be the first protest march that Oakham has seen in a very long time and I received confirmation last night that the BBC will be there to film it… So please, be there and show your support!

OK2WAY A formal protest group to run the wider campaign of which this petition forms a part has been formed. OK2WAY will be chaired by Tim Norton of Tim Norton Motors and will plan and coordinate all activities from now until the final RCC Council Meeting regarding the One-Way proposal in March 2018. The media, all local papers, local radio and the BBC have been briefed accordingly.

STREET STALL OK2WAY will hold their first Street Stall, in Oakham Market Square, this Saturday, 9th December, from 09:00 till 13:00. Please come along and support us. There will be hard copy petition forms to sign if you have friends / family who haven’t signed yet and bright One Way / No Way leaflets which you can display to show your support. We hope to see you there tomorrow. With 300+ supporters in each Oakham Ward and another thousand elsewhere in Rutland, I believe that the Councillors and our MP are beginning to really feel the pressure – So, let’s keep it up! Local Referendum on Oakham One-Way Scheme

Rutland’s historic county town of Oakham has been steadily declining as a market town over recent years and factors such as long-term roadworks have forced an even greater downturn in trade. Rutland County Council’s Consultation Exercise received 952 responses of which 53% (504) were in favour of the one-way system and a further exercise covering only 5,500 properties had responses from just 1592 householders with only 47% (710) in favour.

Nextdoor Wing – your village gossip site


We have nearly 40% of the households in Wing as members of Nextdoor Wing, a social media site that is just limited to the residents of Wing, (Lyndon and Pilton) unlike ALL the other sites where anyone in the world can see what you are talking about. It is strictly LOCAL and you can’t join unless you are invited by someone in Wing. The address is checked by Nextdoor.co.uk AND is verified by me, John Oakley.

It is for purely local use and your ID will not be available outside the village and the only advertising allowed is by people in the village to people in the village. It has a website wingoakham.co.uk but all messages can also be sent to you by email.

You can broadcast a message to everyone in the village or – and this is the most popular use – use it as a private message system, neighbour-to-neighbour with no danger of inadvertently sending the message out of the village.

This is a map of those households that are signed up. If there is a green dot then they have someone in the household signed up, if the whole plot is green the everyone registered in the house is signed up, if the green dot is not on a plot then the person has chosen to just broadcast the street name.

If there is a yellow dot they have been invited to join but declined the offer.

In the 6 weeks it has been up we have found rounded up 3 baby-sitters, 2 cats, 1 football, found transport for someone when the bus missed the village (again), recruited some elves for Santa and solicited some photos of Santa’s visit. I can’t see who are what the private messages are or who they are to/from but I can see the count of messages and there are over 50 a week, probably gossip!

If you are not yet a user try it, you’ll like it!

There is an iPhone and an Android app as well.
