Harvest lunch

There was a great turnout of around 70 folk for the Harvest Lunch today. Delicious food and great company ensured we all had a great day  – huge thanks to Jeffy and David Wood for allowing us to use their barns for this wonderful village event.

Thanks to all the team who helped with the food preparation and serving- Jane Peach, Helen Bateman, Alice Hill, Phillipa Gallimore, Debbie Whight and all those who made crumbles and helped with the clearing up.

Sheila Casey

Sheila Casey, the always-smiling Wing village postmistress and shopkeeper, sadly died today, October 5th 2017, after a long illness following a stroke nearly 3 years ago. She had lived in The Priory, Stamford, since her stroke.

Sheila and her husband Tony had lived in Wing since coming from Church Langton nearly 50 years ago so they were closer to Preston where Tony ran the garage. When Mrs Dale retired from running the Post Office she asked Sheila if she would like to do it. Sheila was happy to accept the challenge as she had been running the village shop in Church Langton.

To begin with she ran it from a counter in the hallway at #6 and gradually started selling odds and ends. This then led her turning her dining room into a shop and re-instating the door that had been there when the same room had previously been a butcher’s shop. She really enjoyed running the shop and post office and was quite sad when she gave it up after Tony had his heart attack

The shop was always a good place for a gossip and keeping up with what was happening in the village. In a way, Sheila was following in the footsteps of her grandfather who had a shop in Kingston-on-Thames after he had learnt his trade from the original Mr Harrod!

Tony died 5 years ago but Sheila was supported by her family and the many friends she had in the village and her friends in the WI.

There will be a service to celebrate her life at a later date.

Ride and Stride 2017

The Ride and Stride of 2015 had a strong team from the village with Cynthia Harris, Paul Brewer and John Oakley taking part on mobility scooters and visited the churches at Wing, Lynden, Pilton and Morcott.

This year sadly our team captain, Cynthia, was unable to take part due to the fact that the 2015 event convinced her that she would be safer in Crown House, Oakham.

But undaunted the remaining members of the team Paul Brewer and John Oakley decided to do it again, proving the Cynthia was right in 2015 when she suggested that as John Oakley on his shopping scooter was too slow. – this year he rode Cynthia’s scooter. Lead by this years captain Paul Brewer, he and John this year visited Manton, Lyndon, Edith Weston, North and South Luffenham before torrential rain stopped play for the team and John scurried home to a hot bath and some dry clothes. Paul, ever the intrepid traveller, left the wimpish Oakley to go home while he, Paul, visited both Morcott and Pilton. John just managed to get back to Top St before his batteries died so Paul pushed the scooter the last few yards while John warmed himself up in the bath.

Next time we will do it this way:IMG-20170913-WA005
